‘New South China Mall’ in Dongguan is the world’s biggest shopping mall (by gross leasable area) but has been 99% empty since opening in 2005. The location isn’t great – it’s not near any major highways and it’s too far from the city centre.
If this place isn’t used as the set for a Chinese remake of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ then there is something wrong with the world.
Parts of the mall have fallen into disrepair and there were rats around the 2 kilometre long Venetian-style canal that runs through the complex.
Though the shopping mall has failed, an entertainment complex in the centre of the development is doing OK. There were quite a few customers in the amusement arcade, cinema and ‘Teletubbies Paradise’.
